Walnut Street Center's Day Habilitation Program opened in August of 2003. The Day Habilitation program provides developmental skill building and support to enable the people who receive services to improve their functional abilities. The program also provides caregivers with support, such as assisting with medical appointments and overseeing adaptive equipment ordering and repairs.
The Day Habilitation program offers adults who have developmental disabilities intensive medical, behavioral and therapeutic services, in order to enhance their quality of life. Activities focus on helping each individual achieve personal goals, while fostering each person's highest level of independence. Individuals involved in the program work on achieving goals in a variety of areas such as self-help, independent living, and communication. Day Habilitation staff who work in conjunction with a clinical team that includes a registered nurse, a physical therapist, an occupational therapist and a speech therapist addresses these goals.
The Day Habilitation Program also develops services in community-based settings that promote opportunities for social integration for individuals with severe medical, behavioral and developmental disabilities. These activities and outings in the community promote developmental skill building and facilitate their inclusion into the community. Community based activities include therapeutic horseback riding, local community gardens, local swimming pools and senior centers.
